During the press conference for his Cannes Competition film *Coward*, Lukas Dhont stated that he uses the past as a lens to say something about the present, consciously aiming to undermine the war genre. He argues that male solidarity has too often been deployed as an instrument of destruction, and that *Coward* critically examines that dynamic. With this film, Dhont seeks a different way to portray the relationship between men in a war context, distancing himself from the traditional glorification that characterizes the genre.
